Urban Visions — Towards Cities for Humans
Urbanization is the trend of the 21st century. In 2010, for the first time in history more humans lived in cities than in rural areas. And the global urban population will further grow. All over the world cities face serious problems in complying with even their core tasks. Traffic conjunctions, pollution, CO2 emissions, lack of adequate and sufficient recreation areas, affordability of living space, waste and water management, social discrepancies are only few of serious challenges.
How can cities manage their mobility, how can they preserve their historical roots and at the same time manage to provide services and plans that give the cities a human face. Action plans are needed to find appropriate solutions that cope with the growing demands. The city of Kyiv has developed a strategy for 2025. And Euro 2012 has already provided some solutions by improving local traffic, by providing modern stadia for large scale sport events, by opening new airports.
The Theme Day for «Urban Visions — Cities for Humans» will take place on June 24th at the European Village in Kyiv. The Theme Day will showcase a meeting of the mayors of European cities that have helped the four Ukrainian Euro 2012 host cities by sharing information on how to best use a large scale event like Euro 2012 for city development and how to maintain and best use the momentum. In the Theme Park an exhibition will present some challenges and solution from Ukraine. The Ukrainian NGO «Big Idea» will seek to involve visitors in developing their individual urban visions in turning cities in areas worth living in. France will show the results of an eco-mobility contest with the young academy of sciences from Ukraine.
