The 14th European Football Championship takes place from June 8th until July 1st in Poland and in Ukraine. It is the first time in the history of the tournament that the Eastern European countries are the hosts of the tournament. Moreover it holds in an EU member country and partner country of the European Neighborhood Policy. The European Football Championships are next to Olympic Games and Football World Cups the event that raises highest global interest.
Increasingly such large and popular events become part of a global dialogue that do not just refer to sports itself but serve as a stage to demonstrate and showcase global development as they bring together people from all over Europe and/or the world.
The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has suggested to use this event for creating a platform to discuss best practices and share experience in sustainable development.
GIZ already possess some experience on how to use such events for promoting themes for development and bring together national and international actors from the world of politics, business, culture and sport and initiate partnerships that extend far beyond football. The aim is that these actors and partnerships will act as good - will ambassadors for:
- a new, forward-thinking and innovative Europe and Ukraine
- Ukraine as an active member in the European Integration Process
- Promoting best- practices in focal areas of global sustainable development.
In the meantime the city of Kyiv and the Delegation of the European Union in Ukraine have decided to jointly support the initiative. Numerous stakeholders from the Ukrainian business and NGOs have expressed their interest. Therefore, this alliance is hosting The European Village - Our Continent. Our Future from June, 02 2012 until July,1 2012 at Bow of Friendship in Kyiv.
